Rachel Wright is a textile artist living and working in Buckinghamshire. She grew up in a creative household surrounded by her father’s paintings and engravings. She studied Fashion and Textiles at Birmingham City University, specialising in embroidery, and completed both a BA and MA before graduating in 1994.
She creates intricate textile artworks that capture the beauty of land and seascapes, as well as birds and animals. Her process begins with a sketch directly onto calico, followed by the careful selection of fabric pieces which she layers and pins into place. Then, working on a domestic sewing machine, she stitches over the pieced fabrics, blending colours and textures much like a painter with a brush and palette.
Much of Rachel’s work is inspired by the natural landscapes of the British Isles, particularly by the movement and energy of the sea and sky, using layers of fabric and thread to evoke the shifting light, swirling clouds and restless tides.
She exhibits and sells her work through exhibitions and galleries mostly in Bucks and Oxfordshire. She is a founding member of The Buckinghamshire Craft Guild where she demonstrates three times a month. She is delighted to be taking part in Bucks Art weeks this year with the fabulous group of artists at St Dunstan’s.
